There are three general stages of gum disease, including gingivitis, periodontitis (periodontal disease), and severe periodontitis. Gingivitis occurs when there is inflammation of the gums due to plaque and calculus buildup and the gums bleed easily but there is no bone loss. Studies have found that approximately 50% of children as affected by gingivitis.

Periodontitis is when there is further gum inflammation that is destructive and causes bone loss over time. Periodontitis, as it progresses further into moderate and severe stages can even lead to tooth loss, abscesses, pain, difficulty eating and speaking, and bad breath. Studies have found that approximately, 42% of the adult population aged 30 and older in the United States has periodontal disease (periodontitis).

Research has also shown that bacteria from untreated periodontal disease can affect other areas of the body including the heart and can increase risks for other health conditions including heart disease, stroke, and diabetes.

Routine dental exams and x-rays along with excellent at home care are essential to ensure proper diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of gum disease. Call to schedule your exam and cleaning today!
