Foods That You Did Not Expect to Cause Cavities

Foods that cause cavities

Although raisins and other dry fruits like dates, figs, and apricots are healthy food choices, they can increase your risk of cavities by sticking to your teeth. These dry fruits contain sugars that stick to your teeth and the bacteria in your mouth utilize the sugar from these foods to produce acid. This acid then damages enamel and eventually causes cavities.

Juices are also known to increase your chances of developing cavities as they can be high in sugar and acidity. The acidity can damage the enamel and form micropores in the enamel.  Similarly, energy drinks, even the sugar-free ones, can cause cavities as they are also acidic and can damage the enamel and eventually lead to cavities.

Lastly, crackers, bread, and potato chips all contain starch, which feeds acid-producing bacteria in our mouths and this acid further causes enamel breakdown and cavities.

It is so important to brush and floss your teeth after consuming these foods. It is also important to keep up with your regular dental checkups to help prevent and treat cavities.
